Common Names: Clematis
Description: Clematis sp. (Clematis) is a member of the Ranunculus Family (Ranunculaceae). The Hortus Kewensis, ed. 2, vol. 3, pp. 342-346 recorded sixteen different Clematis species native to Europe, North America, the Levant, Japan, or the West Indies. The Swiss designer, Louis-Albert DuBois, illustrated a vining, large flowered, likely cultivated variety of Clematis. Other species can be large or small flowered, vining or herbaceous, flowers composed of four or more petals, and having open-faced or bell-shaped flowers. It is believed that there are about 380 species of the genus Clematis and uncounted numbers of cultivated varieties.
